Lunches/Healthy Schools

 School Dinners

We use an online payment system called Gateway, which is easy to use and offers the flexibility to make payments whenever and wherever you like — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Payments are secure, using the highest level of card security, ensuring that funds reach the school safely.

Our school menu runs on a three-week rotation, offering a variety of healthy and balanced meals. All Mayville School dinners are prepared in a Halal kitchen, with food freshly prepared and cooked on site each day.

We are excited to announce that we will be launching Family Dining in April 2026, giving families the opportunity to enjoy meals together at school.

The government currently provides free school meals for all children from Reception to Year 6, so every child is entitled to a free school dinner.

For more information about school meals or Family Dining, please contact the school office.

As of April 2026 we will be introducing family dining style at school. It is a wonderful way to promote social skills, independence, and healthy eating habits among students.

What Is Family Dining Style?
Family dining is a mealtime approach where children and adults sit together, share food from common serving dishes, and serve themselves with guidance. Instead of pre-plated meals, food is placed in bowls and passed around the table.

Benefits for Students
1. Builds Social Skills
Encourages polite conversation
Teaches turn-taking and table manners
Strengthens peer relationships

2. Promotes Independence
Children practice serving themselves
Develops fine motor skills
Builds confidence in decision-making

3. Encourages Healthy Eating
Children try new foods when they see peers eating them
They learn to listen to their hunger cues
Reduces food waste by allowing self-portioned servings

4. Supports Emotional Development
Creates a calm, community-centered environment

Universal school dinners apply to children in Reception to Year 6.

Mayville Academy Healthy Schools Information

At Mayville Primary School we want all children to be healthy and achieve at school and in life. We believe that by providing opportunities at school for enhancing emotional and physical health, we will improve long- term health, reduce health inequalities, increase social inclusion and raise achievement for all.

Healthy Eating

Our school has a team of kitchen staff who prepare cooked meals using healthy ingredients. Any snacks bought from home must be healthy and therefore we do not permit chocolate, sweets, food with a high sugar content or crisps. Children in Key Stage 1 are provided with fruit daily (Government free fruit scheme). We encourage parents to consider healthy options when packing lunches for their children.

We do not permit fizzy drinks, sweets or high sugar content items in lunch boxes. This rule also applies to children when on school trips. Our school operates a daily breakfast club where children can eat a healthy breakfast and participate in quiet activities from 8am. Every child is encouraged to bring a water bottle to school every day. Children have access to water throughout the day.

Physical Activity

Physical activity contributes significantly to the being healthy national outcome for children. At Mayville children are provided with a range of opportunities to be physically active including during P.E and our extensive range of extra curricular clubs such as Gymnastics, Football, Netball and Dance. They understand how physical activity can help them to be healthier and can improve and be a part of their every day life. Our school ensures that children participate in the recommended number of hours of physical activity per week.

Emotional Health and Wellbeing, including bullying

Emotional health and wellbeing contributes significantly to necessary outcomes for children: being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and economic wellbeing.

Our school’s promotion of positive emotional health and wellbeing helps children to understand and express their feelings, build their confidence and emotional resilience, and therefore their capacity to learn. This is done through carefully planned SEAL and PSHE lessons, lessons with strong SMSC links, regular Circle Time, Golden Rules, Merit Assemblies and by fostering an environment where children have various role models they feel able to talk to. The children learn about bullying and this is explicitly taught during anti-bullying week and in the SEAL theme ‘Say No To Bullying’. Children are made aware of strategies to tackle bullying and where and how to seek support if these issues affect them.
