Understanding the World (UTW)
• People and Communities
• The World
• Technology
In this area of learning children are developing the crucial knowledge, skills, and understanding that help them make sense of the world. This forms the foundation for later work in science, design and technology, history, geography and information and communication technology (ICT).
How you can help:
Encourage children to talk about past and future events. Provide ways of preserving memories of special events,
e.g. making a book, collecting photographs, drawing and writing.
Support children in exploring similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families,
communities and traditions.
Allow children to become involved in planting at home and draw attention to growth and change.
Involve children in cooking and baking and talk about the changes that they observe, such as melting or dissolving.
Show children how to use technology at home, such as using the telephone or TV remote and draw attention to
technology when out and about, e.g. scanning barcodes at the supermarket.
