We implement a systematic approach to the learning of letters, the sounds they make and their names. All children take part in a daily phonics session and will learn how to read and write words and sentences. Children will be read a wide range of books and will read simple words and sentences and show that they have understood what they have read.
How you can help:
Develop a love of books and share lots of different books with your child.
Play rhyming games and share rhyming stories with your child. Can they identify words that rhyme and offer a string of rhyming words?
Encourage your child to hear the sound at the beginning of words by playing games such as ‘I spy’. E.g. “I spy with my little eye something beginning with mmmmm”.
Point out and read words in the environment. Encourage your child to ‘write’ for different purposes, e.g. lists, letters, invitations, etc.
Encourage your child to recognise his/her name when it is written down. N.B. When teaching children to write their name please use capital and lowercase letters correctly,
e.g. Daniel and not DANIEL.
