Mathematics

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

At Mayville Primary School we use the CGP Mathematics series with the aim of teaching for maths mastery. This series rigorously covers every aspect of the National Curriculum.

The CGP Mathematics series comprises of; a differentiated class textbook, revision guides, various workbooks for different abilities, and assessment tests to monitor progress.

Topics from the programmes of study are taught in this chronological order:

  • Numbers
  • Place Value
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Percentages
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Statistics

After in depth teacher modelling, students work through differentiated exercises in lessons. Their work is marked on a daily basis and they’re provided with formative feedback and response questions. Formative feedback informs pupils about their strengths and weaknesses, and what they need to improve. The response questions assess their understanding of the topic, and see whether they have applied the feedback.

To monitor the progress and attainment of pupils, assessment tests are administered on a regular basis.  Knowledge gaps and weaknesses are identified early and remedied with interventions. These intervention classes are held every morning on a daily basis.

We also provide Saturday maths booster classes to all pupils free of charge.

Our firm belief is that no child should be left behind; we strive to do everything within our capacity to help children succeed.

To consolidate the learning that takes place in lessons, our Maths Coordinator has created maths tutorial videos and maths posters:

Please contact the school for a link to our amazing resources.

These videos and posters cover every aspect of the programmes of study, and will help pupils prepare for SATS. We encourage students to watch these videos, take notes, and practise doing the exercises. The maths posters are given to all students for them to revise at home and be in unison with the methods and layout taught in school.

For children to make progress in mathematics, it is absolutely essential that they can recall number facts. We encourage parents/carers to practise with their children; times-tables, number bonds and other number facts, on a daily basis. The maths posters contain all of the number facts that need to be memorised.

A maths curriculum evening for parents is held every year. In this presentation, parents are acquainted with: the aims of the national curriculum; the aims and expectations of the school; maths mastery; maths resources and strategies. Parents are provided with resources to support their children at home.

The net result of our effort is that the school has achieved a 100% pass rate in KS2 SATS Mathematics for two consecutive years, and several of our students have gone onto win the UK National Mathematics challenge – this is an outstanding achievement!
